occlusal splints

Bruxism is abnormal and excessive clenching and grinding of the teeth that may lead to permanent damage of the teeth and jaw joints. Some people clench and grind during the day, while others unconsciously clench and grind at night while sleeping.

Although the causes of Bruxism are still being studied, it is believed that physical stress, tension, or abnormalities in the anatomy of the teeth or jaws contribute to clenching and grinding of the teeth.

Do you currently experience any of the follow symptoms?

  • Pain and sensitivity in teeth
  • Chronic facial pain
  • Tension headaches
  • Flattened or worn teeth surfaces (sometimes revealing yellow dentine layer beneath)
  • Broken/chipped teeth or microfractures of the tooth enamel
  • Stiffness and pain in the jaw joint muscles which may cause difficulty chewing or opening the mouth

An Occlusal Splint is a removable apparatus worn at night similar to a mouth guard but less bulky. ‘Occlusal’  refers to the biting surfaces of the teeth.  The splint is custom made using a plastic material and fitted to your teeth. Wearing the splint at night helps relieve jaw pain, prevent further wearing of the teeth from grinding and may be a solution to treat Bruxism.
